Anglican Bishop Victoria Matthews blessed the St Mark's School's new senior learning building (Wana Hourua) in a ceremony to mark its formal opening.
Built to replace buildings damaged in the Canterbury earthquakes, the new building is designed with modern innovative learning environments (ILE) in mind and is the first stage in the school's $7M redevelopment programme. The building comprises three home base teaching areas and a common learning space. A multi-purpose art, technology, science and drama space is also provided for use by all of the school.
Further stages of development are already underway at the school. Major strengthening and expansion of the school's hall along with construction of a new music suite is nearly half way through. A start has also been made on strengthening and modernising the school's existing junior block.
Signal Management Group was engaged by the school's board of proprietors in 2014 to lead the preparation of a site master plan and subsequently the staged implementation of the plan. Signal's project manager for the St Mark's project is Stuart Anderson: "It's exciting to see St Mark's staff and students using the new senior building, which is the first stage of the redevelopment."
